There is nothing quite like a fall drive through Kentucky. The air turns crisp, the trees glow with red and gold leaves, and the backroads invite you to slow down and enjoy the ride. For many of us, there is something peaceful about rolling the windows down and seeing the hills and horse farms pass by.
Here are a few favorite routes that show off the best of Kentucky’s autumn beauty:
Red River Gorge Scenic Byway
This drive winds through the Daniel Boone National Forest and offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the state. You will see rock formations, natural bridges, and overlooks that will make you want to stop for photos at every turn.
Old Frankfort Pike
Between Lexington and Frankfort, this route takes you through the heart of horse country. The stone fences, rolling pastures, and historic barns make it feel like you have stepped back in time.
Kentucky Route 90 through Cumberland Falls
Known as the “Niagara of the South,” Cumberland Falls is worth the trip any time of year, but it is especially beautiful in the fall. Stop at the falls for a picnic or to see if you can catch the famous moonbow on a clear night.
Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway
This byway runs through the Land Between the Lakes area and offers quiet forest views, wildlife sightings, and plenty of spots to stop and stretch your legs.
Berea to Paint Lick Loop
This is a peaceful countryside drive filled with charm. You can start in Berea, known for its local art and crafts, then head toward Paint Lick and enjoy farmland views and small-town character.
Before heading out, remember to check your tires, bring some snacks and water, and let someone know your route. Then take your time and enjoy the view. Fall in Kentucky never lasts long, but the memories do.
